Autumn usually came all too soon for busy farm families. With days getting shorter, afternoons rich with slanting golden light were to be savored.

Wild game provided fresh meat, and the promise of special meals for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Everyone took advantage of the last warm days to get as many outdoor tasks done as possible.

Families felt enormous relief when their grain was safely harvested, but threshing was a slow process when done with a flail.

Workers swung the flail in a circular motion so the short swingle, attached to the longer handle with a looped leather thong, struck spread grain with just enough force to loosen the kernels.
